Victor Somerfeld joined DeGolyer and MacNaughton in 2021 as a geologist, evaluating reserves and original hydrocarbon volumes. Prior to joining D&M, Somerfeld worked for Newpek, Apache, Enap Sipetrol, and Petrobras, where he worked as Exploration/Development Geologist for assets in Argentina, Peru, Mexico, and the United States. He has 25 years of experience in the industry.

Somerfeld obtained a 6-year university degree in geological sciences from the University of Cordoba (UNC), Argentina in 1999. He is fluent in Spanish and English.

Major Projects

Somerfeld has participated in multidisciplinary teams (geophysicists, geologists, petrophysicists, and engineers) dedicated to the exploration and development of oil and gas fields, reservoir characterization, drilling, and workover proposals in many onshore and offshore blocks in the United States, Mexico, Peru, and Argentina.

Among other projects, Somerfeld worked with a large, multi-year contract with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) of Trinidad and Tobago, delivering a comprehensive evaluation of gas reserves across all producing gas fields in the country. Somerfeld led the geoscience evaluation to calculate gas volumes in place for each field in accordance with the PRMS, generate detailed structural and isopach maps, and define the vertical limits and lateral extent of individual reservoirs.

Somerfeld contributed to the evaluation of oil and gas reserves across onshore and offshore fields of the Salina Basin in Mexico, including Bellota Jujo, Samaria Luna, Cantarell, and Ku‑Maloob‑Zaap, among others. He reviewed and refined 2–D and 3–D geological models, generated structural and isopach maps, and defined reservoir extent to assess hydrocarbons in place. Volume uncertainty was evaluated through deterministic 1P, 2P, and 3P cases, working closely with the petrophysics and reservoir engineering teams to calibrate volumetric analysis and estimate reserves.

He worked in the Eagle Ford unconventional project in the Burgos Basin, proposed a development plan in the exploration and development of the Z1 block offshore Peru, and participated in exploratory and development projects in several basins in Argentina.
